April brought significant rainfall to the Sibaya Precinct, with over 230mm recorded during the month. This has resulted in a surge in vegetation growth and debris build-up, keeping our Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance (CGM) teams extremely active. From clearing waste to trail restoration and replanting initiatives, here’s how we’ve worked to keep the precinct clean, accessible, and environmentally resilient.
Beach and Forest Clean-Ups: 219 Bags of Waste Collected
Following heavy rains, a total of 219 bags of refuse were cleared from the Sibaya beach and forest trails. This clean-up operation not only removed litter and storm-related debris but also helped protect our local environment and support marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
Our thanks go to the SPMMA teams for their consistent efforts in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all who live in, work in or visit the Sibaya Precinct.
Vegetation Management and Replanting
In April, our teams applied herbicides for weed control across pavements and landscaped circles, particularly after the rains, when invasive and unwanted plants tend to flourish. We also prepared soils and began replanting in areas where landscaping had become tired or weather-worn. These replanting efforts not only restore visual appeal but promote long-term ecological health by supporting healthy root systems and soil stability.

Major sand and silt washaways caused by the rains were swept and cleared across key access areas to ensure pathways and roads remain clean and safe.

Forest Conservation and Alien Invasive Control
Our Alien Invasive Control team completed a 25.5-hectare sweep of the coastal forest, including focused restoration work in Node 5, where trail networks are being gradually re-established. These efforts are part of our long-term strategy to improve and preserve this ecologically rich zone, ensuring controlled access while encouraging conservation awareness and responsible use of the forest.

Forest maintenance also included:
-
Trail and step repairs following the rains
-
Pruning of overhanging branches
-
Clearing and cutting of the main forest trail to maintain safe and comfortable access

Biodiversity in Focus: 2025 City Nature Challenge
In celebration of Freedom Day and the 2025 City Nature Challenge, members and visitors were encouraged to explore the Sibaya Coastal Forest and contribute flora and fauna sightings via the iNaturalist app.
Our team has already logged 12 unique observations and identified 11 new species this month—contributing valuable data to global biodiversity records. This initiative not only showcases Sibaya’s rich biodiversity but also offers a rewarding way for the community to engage with conservation and learn more about the natural heritage that surrounds them.
Working Towards a Resilient, Green Precinct
The combined work of our CGM and conservation teams continues to reflect our commitment to managing Sibaya as a clean, safe, and ecologically sustainable precinct. Whether it’s clearing litter, restoring trails or replanting our gardens, every action contributes to the long-term health and appeal of this unique coastal environment.
If you’d like to get involved or report any maintenance or environmental issues, please contact the SPMMA team.
