Exploring the natural wonders of Sibaya: A monthly roundup with Mazwi Ngubane

Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance, Community and Sustainability

As we embrace the transition from autumn to winter, the Sibaya Coastal Precinct continues to dazzle with its natural beauty. In our latest monthly roundup, Mazwi Ngubane, Supervisor at the Sibaya Conservation Trust, shares some exciting sightings and experiences from April that highlight the richness of our coastal ecosystem.

Coastal Dune Current: A Floral Delight

One of the highlights of April has been the blooming of the Coastal Dune Current along our coastline. This beautiful shrub not only adds a splash of color to our landscape but also attracts a myriad of insects with its sweet nectar-filled flowers. Keep an eye out for the Pearl Charaxes and stripped Lagoon Fly fluttering around, adding to the vibrant tapestry of nature.

Lichens: Nature’s Paintbrush

If you’ve noticed a green, mossy hue adorning some of our forest trees, you’ve likely spotted lichens. These fascinating organisms not only add aesthetic appeal but also play a vital role in our ecosystem. Their presence serves as a testament to the health and biodiversity of our forests.

Chameleon Encounter: A Rare Treat

Imagine stumbling upon a large Chameleon gracefully perched on a Coral Tree along Heleza Boulevard. Such encounters remind us of the diverse wildlife that calls Sibaya home. Keep your eyes peeled for these masters of camouflage blending seamlessly into their surroundings.

Spotted Eagle Owl: A Majestic Sight

At the entrance to Sibaya Forest, a majestic Spotted Eagle Owl was spotted, its speckled feathers blending effortlessly into the shadows. These magnificent creatures serve as guardians of the night, symbolizing the harmony between our urban environment and the natural world.

Pond Life and Water Lilies: Nature’s Symphony

For bird enthusiasts, the pond is currently buzzing with activity, offering a spectacle of avian life to admire. And if you’re a fan of vibrant colors, don’t miss the Water Lilies in full bloom, casting a bright purple hue across the water’s surface.
