Help Support Woollyneck Stork Research: Keep Reporting Colour-Ring Sightings

Community and Sustainability

We would like to remind all Sibaya residents and avid conservationists to continue assisting in the important work of tracking colour-ringed Woollyneck Storks. Your help plays a vital role in supporting an ongoing UKZN research project aimed at better understanding the movements and behaviours of these magnificent birds.

If you spot a Woollyneck Stork with a colour ring on its leg (similar to the example shown below), please report the ring code and location to Jonah Gula via WhatsApp on 071 190 0604.

Important Notes for Reporting:

  • Rings are best read with binoculars or by taking a photo with a regular camera (not a cellphone) and zooming in to capture the code clearly.

  • Each ring has a unique combination (e.g., 1ZR) that helps researchers track individual birds.

Your participation contributes valuable data that aids conservation efforts and helps protect this vulnerable species along our coastline.

Thank you for continuing to assist in these vital efforts and for helping us maintain Sibaya as a haven for both people and wildlife.
