The month of March brought with it over 200mm of rainfall, placing extra pressure on our Cleaning, Greening, and Maintenance (CGM) teams to respond swiftly and effectively to changing conditions across the Sibaya Precinct. Despite the challenges posed by persistent wet weather, the team rose to the occasionโdelivering essential upkeep, safety responses, and environmental care throughout the precinct.
Maintaining Public Spaces Amidst Heavy Rainfall
With lush growth fuelled by the rains, our cleaning and greening teams focused on pruning overgrown vegetation along the precinctโs centre islands and road verges, ensuring visibility and neatness throughout. Strategic herbicide applications were also carried out to control emerging weed growth, which tends to accelerate post-rainfall.

Alongside their routine duties, the teams responded to sand washaways and debris buildup across key roadways and paths. Their quick action helped keep thoroughfares clean and safe for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

March also saw our teams conduct additional beach clean-ups to remove the large volumes of litter and marine debris that washed ashore following heavy rains. These proactive measures help protect the coastal ecosystem while maintaining the aesthetic quality of the Sibaya beachfront.

Streetlighting: Repairs and Progress
Ensuring public safety and night-time visibility remains a priority. As of the end of March, our maintenance efforts have restored 82% of precinct streetlighting to full operation. Some unforeseen delays and technical issues have impacted the pace of repairs, but our team remains committed to addressing the outstanding faults in the weeks ahead. We extend our thanks to residents for their patience as we continue working towards complete precinct-wide functionality.
Storm-Related Infrastructure Risks Addressed
Routine infrastructure inspections this month identified damage to the Ohlanga River Bridge as well as a washaway along the M4. Both issues were promptly reported to the relevant authorities, who responded quickly to secure the areas and mitigate any immediate risks.
We appreciate the swift collaboration of municipal and provincial teams as they now move into the assessment phase for long-term repair solutions, ensuring road safety and structural integrity going forward.
Committed to Resilience and Readiness
Our CGM and infrastructure teams continue to work with efficiency, foresight, and responsiveness to meet the demands of the season. As the precinct experiences increased rainfall and environmental pressure, these efforts are essential in keeping Sibaya safe, accessible, and beautifully maintained.
