We would like to inform all Sibaya residents and members that a controlled burn has been scheduled for Friday, 22 August 2025, weather permitting. The burn is set to take place in the Scrub Robin Grasslands (adjacent to Signature Estate) and along the Bee Eater Grassland and MB Servitude (adjacent to Gold Coast Estate).
Please note that controlled burns are highly weather-dependent. Should high winds or sudden weather changes occur, the scheduled date and time may be postponed. Residents are reminded to keep windows and doors closed if living near the affected areas. A map has been shared highlighting the specific burn areas in yellow for clarity.

Why Controlled Burns Are Important
Controlled or prescribed burns are a vital ecological management tool. In grassland and forest-edge ecosystems like those at Sibaya, fire plays a natural role in:
-
Reducing wildfire risk by removing excess dry vegetation that could fuel uncontrolled fires.
-
Promoting biodiversity, as certain plant species rely on fire to trigger flowering or regeneration.
-
Controlling alien invasive species that may otherwise outcompete indigenous flora.
-
Rejuvenating grasslands, creating healthier habitats for birds, buck, and other local wildlife.
By conducting these burns in a carefully planned and monitored way, we ensure that ecological balance is maintained while protecting surrounding infrastructure and residents.
Safety Measures
Our teams will be working in collaboration with eThekwini Fire Department and conservation specialists to manage the burn safely. Fire crews will be on standby throughout the operation.
We ask all residents and visitors to please avoid the affected grassland trails during the burn.
We appreciate your cooperation in ensuring the success of this important ecological management activity. For more information on what controlled burns are and how they work, you can revisit our previous story here.
