Proactive maintenance and conservation efforts in Sibaya Coastal Forest

Cleaning, Greening and Maintenance

Our cleaning, greening and maintenance teams can be commended for the hard work over the last month, focused on preserving and enhancing our Sibaya Coastal Forest.

Alien Invasive Maintenance

Last month, our team completed a comprehensive sweep of 6.1 hectares of forest area to address alien invasive species. This critical work helps protect native flora and maintain the ecological balance of our forest. We have now entered a new phase of initial alien invasive clearing in the Phase One portion of the Node Five buffer zone. This operation will continue through October, after which we will begin routine scheduled upkeep of this newly cleared area. These efforts will not only preserve the forest but also open up more zones for recreational use. Once established, these areas will be integrated into the existing trail network from Node One through to Node Five, enhancing the experience for all visitors.

Brush Cutting and Path Maintenance

Due to the low rainfall, the forest is quite dry, increasing the risk of fires. To mitigate this, our team has been diligently brush cutting and maintaining paths. These actions are crucial in preventing fires and ensuring safe and enjoyable trails for hikers, bird watchers, and nature enthusiasts. Unfortunately, litter has been found along our forest paths. Our team has been actively picking up litter to keep the forest clean and pristine. We urge all visitors to dispose of their waste responsibly and help us maintain the natural beauty of the Sibaya Coastal Forest.

Annual Planned Buffer Zone Maintenance

In collaboration with the relevant municipal authorities, we have secured the necessary approvals to start our annual planned buffer zone maintenance. We are preparing for a controlled burn scheduled for the first two weeks of August. This controlled burn is essential for maintaining the ecological health of the forest and preventing uncontrolled wildfires. Our team will ensure that all safety protocols are strictly followed to protect both the environment and the community. We will members updated on the scheduled burn dates.

Future Plans and Recreational Use

These conservation and maintenance efforts are paving the way for more accessible and enjoyable forest areas. As we clear and maintain these spaces, we look forward to incorporating them into our trail network, offering new paths and areas for exploration and recreation.
