A fascinating discovery on Sibaya’s beach this past week — a whale bone — serves as an important reminder about our collective responsibility to protect marine and coastal resources.
The bone, likely brought ashore by the tide, was promptly reported and safely removed in consultation with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the authority responsible for managing protected species and materials in our region.
What To Do If You Discover Whale Bones or Similar Items
While it’s natural to be curious when you come across something so unusual and striking on the beach, it’s crucial to remember that bones, skeletons and other remains of marine animals are protected by law and require a permit to remove.
If you come across what appears to be a whale bone or any other protected material, please notify Ezemvelo Wildlife (033 845 1000) or contact Mazwi Ngubane, Sibaya Conservation Trust Supervisor (063 603 7855) immediately.
These resources form part of our coastal heritage and play a role in scientific and conservation efforts — removing them without proper authorisation undermines these initiatives and can result in penalties.
Working Together to Protect Our Environment
